Talking Flowers // February

Welcome to the February issue of Talking Flowers, where we step into Spring with talk of the first flowers of our still new year.

Once more our magazine is full of exciting news and articles themed around our passion - flowers. In Bloom, features not one but two flowers of the month - the freesia and the snowdrop - evoking the scent of spring.

There's also our Flowercard People Award - and this month we're honouring all the Mums out there.

February's Flower Fashionista looks at the current vogue for floral chocolates, made to look and taste utterly irresistible. Whilst our Made with Love craft project is a floral themed doorstop to make your home and lifestyle instantly glamorous with a floral twist.

Don't forget we'd love to hear from you. If you've any ideas, comments or contributions please get involved through our new dedicated email address: talkingflowers@flowercard.co.uk

Herald of the new season, freesias are traditionally delicate white or yellow, but can now be enjoyed in a range of pretty colours. Famed for their sweet, fresh fragrance, they always lift our spirits when we step into our florists' studio at Flowercard HQ.

As a spring flower symbolic of innocence and trust, freesias are perfect to celebrate new beginnings such as births, christenings, engagements or marriages. Our best selling Floral Dreams Flowercard, with its dandelion clock design and sweet freesia posy, works so well for all these occasions, whilst our Meadow Sweet Flowercard (pictured left) is perfect when you add the recipient's own personal details which we'll print for you onto the card.

Freesias also represents thoughtfulness, making them so apt for our Sweet Nectar Get Well Flowercard (pictured below left), what better way to speed recovery along with that other natural healer - lavender?

The Perfect Scent

The Freesia's sublime fragrance has always inspired perfumes, with Antonia's Flowers the one that is said to really capture its beauty. Created by Long Island florist Antonia Bellanca, Antonia's Flowers was designed to evoke the experience of walking into her New York flower shop on a spring morning.

Snowdrop Season

Of course, the most famous spring flower is the snowdrop. From around January 25th to mid March, fabulous displays of snowdrops are scattered across the UK, so wrap-up warm and get out among them!

Remember to breathe deeply on warmer days, because it's then that snowdrops release their wonderful, fresh fragrance.

Many gardens in the UK offer amazing blankets of snowdrops to walk among. Colesbourne Park in Gloucestershire is possibly the most famous, but there is also Cambo and Finlaystone in Scotland, Plas yn Rhiw in Wales and Walsingham in Norfolk.

The Great British Gardens website has a full list of places to enjoy snowdrops - which one is closest to you? Who knows, the most picturesque displays could be right in your own patch!

In Britain many churches and ruined abbeys abound with snowdrops right now, planted - it's thought - to honour the feast of Candlemass on February 2nd. Which would explain why this gorgeous little flower is also known as the Candlemass Bell.

The Flower Fashionista: DO eat the Daisies!

Here at Flowercard we just adore all things flora, from fresh bouquets to floral fabrics, jewellery with glittering petals to... chocolates. Yes! Gorgeous flower shaped chocolates!

Made from the finest Belgian chocolate, our Choc Box Card (pictured), in a choice of Daisy or Funky Flower designs, offers a delicious twist on the Flowercard idea with nine perfect little chocolate flowers inside the card.

Exquisitely detailed, each chocolate flower design has firstly been created in plaster by hand, so that the finished confection is superbly life-like.

It really begs the question: can you bring yourself to bite into them? Well do, because we have and they taste is as good as they look!

With Mother's Day on the horizon, we've decided to honour a busy, loving, hard-working, rushed-off-her-feet kind of mum for our February Award.

But of course, that sounds like every mum doesn't it?

The mum we've picked to represent all wonderful mums out there is Lucy Lermer. Nominated by her mother in law Marion, who tells us:

"Lucy and my son have four daughters of school age - they both have full time jobs and Lucy leaves home at 7am and often does not get in before 6.30pm. She will then take them to netball practise, extra tuition lessons and always has food in the house and cooks almost every evening. It is a noisy, chaotic household with 3 teenagers, all with raging hormones, and a ten year old vying for her attention - they all get it and she manages to spend time with each of them. She also has time for my husband and I and will call us and visit us on Saturday or Sunday morning in between her household shopping - also asks us for dinner with them at least once a fortnight. My daughter is wonderful, my daughter in law is perfect!"

We think Lucy sounds like a truly wonderful mum and daughter-in-law, and we'd also like to say how wonderful too of Marion to notice Lucy's hard work and take time to nominate her for this award.

We'll now contact Marion and ask her which Flowercard she would like us to send to Lucy on her behalf, and what special message she'd like us to print on the front to make it completely unique.

If you know someone like Lucy who deserves a Flowercard, why not nominate them for a Flowercard People Award? Every month we'll select a winner to receive your choice of Flowercard, with your personal message on the front, for FREE. Even if they don't win this month, they'll still go back into the draw, to be considered again and again.

So what are the qualities we'll be looking for in our Flowercard People Award?

Well, that's up to you! Maybe people who always think of others, individuals who've stayed strong through difficult times, friends who've shown courage, kindness, selflessness and determination. You tell us by nominating them.

  • Please tell us the full name of your nominee, and describe why they deserves a FREE Flowercard in no more than 100 words.
  • Be sure to include your full name too, and daytime phone number for us to contact you should your nomination win.
  • Send your nomination in an email to our NEW dedicated address talkingflowers@flowercard.co.uk and please type "Flowercard Award Nomination" in the subject line.
  • Please read the Flowercard Award Terms and Conditions

We just love this fabulous doorstop! Really stylish and so useful, it can keep a door open or stop it banging open too wide!

The talented Beccy Ridsdel is behind this simple craft idea, and she's written a fabulous tutorial for creating the doorstep on her craft blog "Wipster".

Just pick a fabric that matches your home. You'll soon receive so many compliments from everyone who walks through the door. Or, pick a friend who'd love this as a gift, and get sewing!

Do take a look at how lovely and easy it is on the Wipster blog.

And can we say what a fabulous choice of fabric, Beccy? So bright and fresh!

Our next issue of Talking Flowers is full of floral inspiration for Mother's Day & Easter.

As well as our pick of the best Flowercards to send that special lady in your life, we'll also look at the top floral perfumes, and tell you everything you need to know about the fabulous daffodil!

And if you know a mum that qualifies as for our Flowercard People Award, do let us know with an email to talkingflowers@flowercard.co.uk.
