Happy Rose Week: A Guide to the Beautiful Rose Flower

We love roses at Flowercard! An iconic flower and a popular gift choice for all occasions. It’s hard to not fall in love with the gorgeous colours, irresistible fragrance, soft petals, and long elegant stems. After all, is there any flower that says “I love you” better than a rose?

Symbolic of love, passion, and luxury, roses are notoriously gifted on Valentine’s Day but a rose can be a popular gift choice for any occasion.

Some of the most popular rose arrangements in our collection are sent as wedding gifts, on Mother’s Day, or for special birthday milestones.

We also love seeing delicate rose petals being used as an environmentally friendly confetti alternative at weddings and other special occasions!

History of the Rose

Roses are legendary throughout history. You have probably heard of its famous reference in Shakespeare's play “Romeo and Juliet” ( ‘A rose by any other name would smell as sweet'). Even ancient cultures used the rose to show love and passion for a partner.

There are many ancient Gods linked to the rose too! The Greeks associated it with Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love; the Romans paired roses with love, linking it to Venus, the Roman Goddess of Love and Ancient Egyptians linked the rose with the God Isis.

One thing all cultures have in common is that a rose is a symbol of spirituality, love, and romance. Today, it is not just a special gift for a lover but is also seen as a thoughtful gesture to show appreciation and admiration to the people in your life.

Rose Meaning

The Rose family name is Rosaceae and its Latin name is Rosa Rubiginosa. The beautiful name comes from the Latin word “Rosa”, a reference to the vivid colours of the flower. It’s common today to see this name used for female baby names.

Rose Colour Meaning

Roses come in so many pretty colours that are perfect for all occasions and each colour takes on a special meaning that can be sent on a specific occasion.

A red rose is an icon of love and romance. Sending a red rose to the person you love is the perfect way to show affection and admiration.

A white rose is symbolic of love, purity, and spirituality commonly found in wedding bouquets. White roses are also often sent with love in times of grief.

A yellow rose is symbolic of friendship. A bouquet or floral arrangement with yellow roses makes perfect gifts to show your gratitude to the special people in your life. We love sending yellow roses to lift someone’s spirit and brighten up their day.

A pink rose is also symbolic of love and care. It is common for pink roses to be sent to mothers or expecting mothers on Mother’s Day or to show a female loved one how much you care about them.

An orange or peach rose is symbolic of happiness and joy. They are used for bridal showers or celebratory events

A green rose symbolises fertility and new beginnings. Although not as common as other rose colours, it is a great choice for celebrating a new milestone or the arrival of a baby.
